Appetite and Sir Thomas Boughey Academy are seeking applications from Theatre Directors or Theatre Companies to support our Self Made: Appetite Cultural Academy Programme.
The Appetite Culture Academy (ACA) programme, in partnership with Newcastle Borough Council and funded by the Staffordshire Police & Crime Commissioner’s Proceeds of Crime Fund, is a pioneering new cultural sector training programme for young people in Staffordshire. ACA is dedicated to investing in and inspiring young people to be actively involved and integrated into making their community better. Through a series of hands-on workshops and mentoring sessions, Appetite is working with two groups of young people in Newcastle-under-Lyme to envision, plan and deliver an outdoor cultural event in their local community in Summer 2018.
We are currently working with a group of Year 10 students group at Sir Thomas Boughey Academy in Halmerend, Staffordshire. The group, Twisted, is planning a fairy tale themed outdoor, community event for the public to take place in the school field in July 2018, featuring performances, music and workshops. They are seeking a Theatre Director or Company to work with the group to devise and create mini performances inspired by fairy tales that the members will perform at the event.
What we are looking for:
We are looking for an experienced Theatre Director / Company with facilitation experience to work with the group of students over a series of workshops, using their ideas as a starting point to devise and create:
- Approximately 5 mini performances (5-10 min in length) on the theme of ‘twisted fairy tales’
The group is also open to hearing from theatre companies with pre-existing productions that compliment the theme of fairy tales, to perform at the event as well as work with them to devise to performances with the group. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss this possibility further.
The group are 14-15 years of age and studying Drama GCSE. There are 10 members who will perform.
Sessions: We anticipate 3 x full day sessions, taking place at Sir Thomas Boughey Academy, Halmerend. We are open to how these sessions are structured.
Essential Skills and Attributes:
- Experience of creating high quality theatre performance
- Experience of leading young people in creating performance
- Experience of devising new high quality work form original ideas
- Experience making work for outdoors
- A strong collaborator
- Skilled in developing young people’s ideas and providing creative input
- Strong communication skills and ability to motivate others and produce high quality results
- DBS registered
Deadline for Applications: 1pm on Monday 28 May 2018
Interviews: w/c 4 June 2018
Workshops: June - July 2018 (dates and times to be confirmed)
Event: Sunday 15 July (date to be confirmed)
£700 (inclusive of expenses)

Twisted is a group of young people based at Sir Thomas Boughey Academy in Halmerend, Staffordshire who are passionate about bringing the community together through the performing arts and creating unusual, unique and magical events.
