Announcing the Light Night Stoke-on-Trent Headline Act!Delivered by Appetite in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent City Council and the Cultural Forum, Light Night Stoke-on-Trent, the brand-new event for the city which will see Burslem Town Centre magnificently lit up from 31 January to 2 February, has announced their headline event: Sense of Unity.
Taking place on Friday 1 February and Saturday 2 February at 7:30pm, specialist German, outdoor puppeteers, Dundu will bring two gentle giants of light to life in Burslem Town Centre accompanied by high-octane live music from renowned percussion ensemble, Worldbeaters in a premiere collaboration performance, Sense of Unity.
Sense of Unity combines visual spectacle, live music and snippets of audience interaction, to bring the community together for an evening of captivating, free outdoor theatre.
As night falls the Worldbeaters will lead the procession through the town in search of the puppets, performing high-energy beats on their unique LED-lit drums and setting the atmosphere for the performance.
Once discovered, the audience encounters the world of Dundu. The puppet’s transparent, flexible bodies, made up of a weave of individual fiber strands, will be lit from the inside, illuminating them against the darkening evening sky. Dundu will be handled and steered by a team of five skilled puppeteers who collectively breathe life into the figures as they interact with the audience. Dundu, either as baby or giant adult is a gentle soul, sharing love and light where he goes.
Audiences are invited to enjoy the different musical worlds: from the West African Kora of Dundu, to the world inspired drumming riffs and rhythms of Worldbeaters, whilst accompanying Dundu on their unique journey through Burslem.
Abi Brown, Deputy Leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council said: ‘We’re thrilled to be presenting this world-renowned live performance at the inaugural Light Night Stoke-on-Trent. Sense of Unity will be a magical and moving procession through the town centre which will truly bring the whole city together. ‘
Fabian of Dundu and Chris and Alex of Worldbeaters said, “We are really happy to be working together and look forward to sharing the light and shaking it out loud with everyone in Stoke-on-Trent as part of this fantastic event for the city.’
